An October 7, 2015 Pacific Standard story by Maya Dusenbery reports that Alzheimer’s has a disproportionate impact on women. We are more likely to develop the disease and more likely to care for someone with it. Researchers estimate that per capita, women bear more then six times the cost of care for Alzheimer’s than men do. These findings are from a new study by The Jacobs Institute of Women’s Health.
Most disturbing to me is that women in their 70s are at almost twice the risk for getting Alzheimer’s as men in the same age group.
My advice is to prepare yourself for our impending Alzheimer’s epidemic, especially if you’re a woman. The best way to do this is with reasonably priced long-term care insurance (LTCi), and now’s the best time to buy it!
