November is National Long Term Care Awareness Month

November 5, 2019 by Honey Leveen Leave a Comment

November is upon us which means… It’s Long Term Care Awareness Month! And time for my annual awareness-raising post. Just kidding! Most of my posts are about raising awareness. 😉

This isn’t just another “Hallmark Holiday”. Long Term Care Awareness Month was created by Congress in 2001. They recognize how important it is to bring this topic into the American conversation. Since then, several governors and mayors have also joined the campaign to highlight this important information campaign.

When it comes to being able to afford often catastrophically expensive long term care (LTC) costs, many of us are unprepared. Our government will not be able to adequately bear the costs of providing LTC. Long term care insurance costs are often a fraction of actual long term care costs.

Measuring Long Term Care Awareness

In 2017, Genworth Financial conducted a survey to see how informed Americans were on the costs, options and even the need for long term care. Participants in the survey shared that their greatest fear about aging was “not having enough money to pay for long term care.” Despite this fear (or maybe because of it? See past blog, “Indecision Paralysis“), only one in five of the respondents had any plan in place to pay for those future medical costs.

The survey found that at least part of this lack of planning is due to misunderstanding what kind of costs could be in their future and which of those costs would be covered by government programs.

“Two out of three adults expect government programs to partially or fully cover the costs of their long term care services, despite the fact that Medicare pays for only limited care and Medicaid has strict financial eligibility requirements. In addition, both programs have come under increasing funding pressure.”

When it came to the purpose of long term care insurance (LTCi):

  • 62% did not understand what LTCi covers
  • 61% didn’t know that LTCi can, among other benefits, help create personalized care plans and locate quality care providers

November is Perfect Timing

Many families spend more time together this time of year. This is a great time to start asking questions and exploring your options together. After all, the decisions you make today will affect your entire family in the future.

Genworth has a wonderful resource to guide family members through this unfamiliar territory. Their “Conversation Starters” can help you navigate though uncomfortable topics like wills, power of attorney, and health care directives. There’s also questions about lifestyle and preferences for medical care options.

November is the perfect month to protect you and your loved ones by building a financial plan. Proper planning can help you access the care you’ll need and will make the quality of life you envision a real possibility.

How Good Food Can Help Your Finances

September 24, 2019 by Honey Leveen Leave a Comment

While researching the value of nutrition on our long term care benefits (“Eating for Life — An LTCi Benefit“), I came across a powerful infographic. There was so much important information in that image, I decided it needed its own blog post. I want to highlight all the great points made.

Many people spend their time and energy looking to solve their health issues with multiple prescriptions. But some of the easiest answers can be found in the foods we eat on a regular basis.

The Friedman School of Nutrition Science & Policy at Tufts University has launched a Public Impact Initiative to address the “nutrition crisis” found across our nation. They are bringing the full power of their research to help create awareness and change. They are targeting farming programs, school lunch offerings, the military and many other stakeholders in the healthcare sector.

Food Is Medicine

The image below starts with the 10 foods that cause nearly half of U.S. deaths (heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes) each year.

  • Eating too much:  sodium, processed meat, sugary beverages, and unprocessed red meat
  • Eating too little:  nuts & seeds, seafood Omega-3, vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and polyunsaturated fats

The Public Initiative aims to save lives and also reduce the skyrocketing costs of healthcare.

Workplace Strategies

  • Reducing employee health risks (like high blood pressure and sugar levels) by only 1% can save employers $83 to $103 each year.
  • Wellness programs lower medical costs by $3.27 for every $1.00 spent

Lower Income Families

  • Increasing intake of fruits & vegetables of all SNAP recipients will save $6.77 billion over a lifetime.

Healthcare System

  • Increasing intake of fruit & vegetables by Medicaid and Medicare participants could prevent almost 2 million cardiovascular disease incidents and save over $40 billion in healthcare costs.
  • Treating diabetes by providing free fresh food lowers the risk of death or other complications by 40%.
  • Increasing the amount of whole grains, nuts, fish, and plant-based oils in our diets can prevent 3.31 million cardiovascular disease events. This could save over $102 billion in healthcare costs.

The LTCi Benefit

Here’s the bonus! While we’re enjoying all of this delicious, nutritious food, we’re feeling the incredible benefits in our bodies. We’re also living longer lives with significantly better health. This lowers our own cost of healthcare.

In addition, this preserves the value of your long term care insurance policy, allowing it to grow in value for a longer period of time. When you finally need to start receiving payments, you will have a deeper well to draw from. This gives you access to a wider variety of care options and a higher quality of life in your later years.

Horrible Story Illustrating Why Medical Insurance and Medicare Supplements Don’t Pay For LTC

July 8, 2014 by Honey Leveen Leave a Comment

Dialysis TreatmentI just came across an all-too-common, tragic story titled “Insurance abruptly stops covering Spokane man’s long-term care.”

This article came through my Google alerts, which are set for “long-term care insurance.” The title instantly caught my attention because I thought this might be bad press about long-term care insurance (LTCi). It wasn’t.

It turns out that this is a horrible story about what can happen without long-term care insurance.

In the over 23 years I’ve been selling LTCi I have never seen a LTCi policy not pay a legitimate claim. LTCi would certainly pay for the care described in this situation.

What this story illustrates so well is that Medicare and medical insurance cannot, will not, do not pay for long-term care. The story is about an innocent man named Doug who had a horrible motorcycle accident and suffered brain damage. His condition will not improve (that’s part of what’s causing the crisis). He needs constant skilled care. Medical insurance and Medicare do no not cover long-term care when there is no possibility of improvement. The best medical insurance and Medicare supplements only cover the type of care Doug needs for limited lengths of time.

In this horrible situation, the nursing home wants to kick him out. “The nursing home called me at 6:30 in the morning on the 11th, saying I had until the 15th to get him moved,” claimed Mrs. Barr (Doug’s wife).

Premera Blue Cross told her Doug’s condition “…wasn’t showing significant progress.”

She said that if she cannot find another solution, her only remaining option is putting Doug on Medicaid. Yet, her lawyer told her that once Doug is on Medicaid then she loses all of his social security, retirement, and life insurance.

In desperation, Mrs. Barr said, Doug even asked the people at the dialysis clinic to help him die.
