Happy Long-Term Care Awareness Month!

November 2, 2016 by Honey Leave a Comment

Long Term Care insurance is Good for America imageNovember is National Long-Term Care Awareness Month (LTCAM). The US Congress created LTCAM so that people would learn more about how hight long term care insurance costs can be.

LTCAM is well recognized by a number of Governors, including Rick Perry and George W. Bush. Houston’s own Mayors Bill White and Annise Parker have issued LTCAM proclamations.

Local, state and national governments recognize how unprepared citizens are. When it comes to being able to afford often catastrophically expensive long-term care (LTC) costs, many of us are unprepared. Our government will not be able to adequately bear the costs of providing LTC. Long term care insurance costs are often a fraction of actual long term care costs.

Does Medicare pay for long-term care? No! Not type of care most Americans need. When long term care lasts for more than a short time, costs can be catastrophic. How much does long term care cost? Visit the Cost of Care Calculator at www.Genworth.com to find out.

The purpose of LTCAM is to raise awareness of the need to plan responsibly for LTC, right now! This is the very best way to ensure dignity, options, access and choices if LTC is necessary.

Unfortunately, the odds of needing LTC are high. You protect against other risks, like a car accident or house fire. The need for LTC is more likely than a house fire or car accident. LTC often costs more than a car or a house. If you’re not prepared, a lengthy LTC need puts your savings and retirement, and family at risk.

Just as it is smart to plan ahead for retirement, it’s smart to plan now for long-term care.

Please check the Resources page of my site for comprehensive, reputable information on LTC.

If you haven’t yet planned for your LTC, I urge you to do so.

Falls are the #1 Cause of Long-Term Care Need

October 17, 2016 by Honey 2 Comments

Elder FallFalls are the #1 cause of injury among seniors; they are a slippery slope to decline, but with appropriate care, can often be avoided.  Many people do not report them.

This article describes what I routinely observe in my practice. LTCi ownership can make accessing appropriate, high quality care quicker, less stressful, and easier.

Low Caregiver Wages Create Vicious Cycle

February 24, 2015 by Honey Leveen Leave a Comment

Low Paid Healthcare WorkerHigher wages are needed to sustain a viable home-care workforce, especially as demand for home services continues to grow with an aging population, home-care worker advocates have argued. A new study has just been published. Here’s the report (PDF), which demonstrates just how serious the wage issue is for home-care workers and those they serve.

An article in the February 18, 2015 edition of Modern Healthcare says we’re going to have a burgeoning number of Baby Boomers who’ll need home care. Most of them will unfortunately, be financially unprepared for long-term care. The article states, “Projections have estimated the number of Americans age 65 and older will more than double, from 40 million in 2010 to 88 million by 2050, according to HHS.”

Quoting again, because home care providers are currently paid such low (and actually declining) wages, “Three out of five of the country’s 2 million home-care aides rely on some type of public assistance through programs such as Medicaid, food stamps or help paying for housing and utilities.”

“The average hourly wage for home-care workers is around $9.61, for an annual median income of $13,000, just above the individual federal poverty level of $11,770.”

“Low pay, scarce worker benefits and limited opportunities for advancement have contributed to an annual turnover rate of 50% among home-care workers.”

The study proves that poverty that poverty wages undermine quality of care.

If you want a to stack the odds in favor of a high dignity, caring, nurturing outcome if you need long-term care, you will need to pay caregivers a living wage. The only way, for most middle-to-upper-class Americans to do this is by owning long-term care insurance (LTCi).

Mechanics and Basics of LTC Rate Increases

November 10, 2014 by Honey Leveen Leave a Comment

LTCi Rate IncreasesI’m fond of this article about long-term care insurance (LTCi) rate hikes from The Society of Actuaries Long-Term Care newsletter.

Yes, I belong to the Society of Actuaries! I have for years. I’m in the LTCi section. I get a quarterly newsletter and try never to miss their annual conference. I normally can barely understand lots of their newsletter articles (which, unsurprisingly, are usually written by actuaries) because they’re so technical.

Once in a while, however, actuaries write articles that are accessible to non-professional mathematicians. “Mechanics and Basics of Long-Term Care Rate Increases” is an example of such a rare event.

Click here to read my prior blog about how and why LTCi rate hikes occur.

Any detail-oriented person interested in really understanding the inner working mechanisms of LTCi should read both my blog and this article.

Happy Long-Term Care Awareness Month!

November 5, 2012 by Honey Leave a Comment

LTCi is Good for AmericaNovember is Long-Term Care Awareness Month. The U.S. Congress has urged “the people of the United States to recognize (this) as an opportunity to learn more about the potential risks and costs … and the options available.” We’re proud to support this important educational campaign.

Long-Term Care Awareness Month was created by the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance (AALTCi). It’s purpose is to encourage the public to plan for the possibility of needing long-term care well in advance of when it might be needed.

You protect against other risks like a car accident or house fire. A need for long-term care is a risk to your savings and to your retirement. It will impact your family and loved ones. Just as it is smart to plan ahead for retirement, it’s smart to plan now for long-term care.
