Why do even very affluent people, who have more than enough money to pay out-of-pocket for their long-term care (LTC), refuse to spend their own money paying for it? I’ve watched this happen over and over, for decades. Here’s why I think this happens.
Falls are the largest non-illness cause of death in the US. When an elderly person falls, they might wind up with broken bones and lengthy re-hab. Ultimately, they might wind up in a nursing home, the one place they most wanted to avoid, and in a downward health spiral. This is often a result of denial of the need for extra help.
